I am having difficulty getting consistently accurate scans for fixed prosthetic cases, especially around margins and posterior areas. Sometimes the final fit is not ideal, even though the scan looks acceptable on screen. I would like advice on scanning technique, moisture control, tissue management, and common mistakes that affect scan quality. What practical steps can improve accuracy and reduce remakes?

To improve scan accuracy for crowns and bridges, focus on technique and environment: Moisture control is critical: Use cotton rolls, suction, and air drying. Saliva or blood will distort margins. Soft tissue management: Use retraction cords or gingival retraction paste to clearly expose margins. Follow correct scan path: Start from occlusal → lingual → buccal in one smooth motion. Avoid jumping randomly. Keep proper distance: Don’t get too close or too far from the tooth; maintain scanner-recommended range. Scan margins slowly: Spend extra time capturing preparation margins from multiple angles. Avoid excessive rescanning: Too many overlays can reduce accuracy. Check calibration: Regularly calibrate your scanner per manufacturer guidelines. Lighting & fogging: Ensure lens is clean and anti-fog if needed.
